ABOUT ABOUT

On Sunday, May 21st: BADLANDS '73 on 35mm.

The Mahoning Drive-In Theater presents a 50th anniversary 35mm screening of Terence Malick’s first feature, the true crime-inspired drama BADLANDS, part of our ongoing Sunday Essentials series.

Sunday Essentials is a series of single-feature 35mm presentations highlighting classics from all genres, with themed trailers and introductions by authors and film scholars, providing context and insight into the films screened.

BADLANDS follows the murderous exploits of star-crossed lovers (portrayed by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek) as they leave a trail of tragedy across the South Dakota Badlands in the late 50s, based on the real-life story of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate.  The seeds of what would become director Terence Malick’s signature style are present here, a poetic, haunting, beautiful and disturbing look at young lovers who’ll do anything to be together and escape their small town, walking a very dark road to an uncertain future.

As part of our Essentials commitment to cinema education and exploration, we’ll present an onscreen introduction to BADLANDS, giving insight into the film and its production.

Gates open at 6pm. Showtime at Sundown.
