On Saturday, September 9th, join us for KEVIN SMITH FEST V, a triple feature of crude comedies that celebrate the everyday folks who serve you, and those who get served!
From QuickStop to Mooby’s and back again, this trio of classic 90s-00s slacker comedies take us into the dark heart of the American retail worker, with a detour into suburban shopping malaise and twentysomething angst.
First up is the one that started it all, the indie movie that launched an Askewniverse, CLERKS (1994)! Follow the counter-bound adventures of convenience store register jockey Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and late-fee lothario Randall (Jeff Anderson) from the video store next door, as they discuss life, love, and the universe while ringing up casual purchases from a rogues gallery of problem customers.
With Jay and Silent Bob along for witlessness and wisdom, CLERKS was a surprise hit that rode the wave of the 90s independent film movement, leading first-time director Kevin Smith to a deal with Universal for his next film…
We move from the convenience store to the wonderland of retail paradise, the lair of the MALLRATS (1995), as best pals Brodie (Jason Lee) and TS (Jeremy London) attempt to win back the loves of their lives (Shannen Doherty and Claire Forlani) and dodge very uncomfortable situations with romantic rivals, game show hosts and mall security. With Jay and Silent Bob as mischief-making avengers, Ben Affleck as a Fashionable Male, and Stan Lee as Stan Lee. (Hint: It’s a sailboat!)
Our third film returns to the world of Dante and Randall, this time clerking their way through the world of fast food in CLERKS II (2006), with some familiar faces returning, and new friends in the form of naïve coworker Elias (Trevor Fehrman) and manager Becky (Rosario Dawson).
Skewering a different aspect of retail hell this time around, with a decade of added wisdom and mileage on our heroes, CLERKS II is a hilarious and surprisingly touching trip back behind the counter. With Jay and Silent Bob holding court outside, Mooby’s is the place to go down on a fistful of meat!
We have some very special surprises in store for those in attendance;)
