REBEL REBEL (Legend of Billie Jean & Desperately Seeking Susan on 35mm)

The year is 1985, and from the Hudson River to the Corpus Christi Bay, women are rising up and getting down!

On Friday, August 4th, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater presents a night of fierce females (and radical FM hits) with REBEL REBEL, a double bill of friendship, fashion, and feminism at the peak of the MTV era.

First up, Helen Slater portrays a modern-day Joan of Arc known as Billie Jean Davy, a rural Texas teen who inspires a regional revolution (and more than a few haircuts) in THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN, when she and her brother, Binx (Christian Slater) stand up to local creepy cronies, the Pyatts, and lead a loyal tribe of friends old and new on the run from the law (Peter Coyote) before circling back – and fighting back – because Fair Is Fair! Major hits by Pat Benatar (“Invincible”) and Billy Idol (“Rebel Yell”) provide the perfectly pumped up soundtrack for this adventure, and may as well have been written and recorded for this film.

Next, Get Into The Groove with DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, as Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette), a bored New Jersey housewife and obsessive follower of a NYC tabloid personals column which the ongoing exchange between two lovers – musician Jim Dandy and wandering free spirit, the titular Susan (Madonna) – plays out, providing the romance and intrigue her own life lacks. But when Roberta sets out in search of her idol on the gritty/glam streets of ‘80s Manhattan (shot on location and on real-life Madonna territory), curiosity and circumstance conspire to bring about a level of excitement – and danger – beyond her wildest dreams…Speaking of dreams, don’t mis Aidan Quinn’s dreamy turn as Dez, film projectionist and knight-in-shining-armor who saves Roberta (or is it Susan?) from both a sinister stalker and cheating husband (Mark Blum).

This celebration of 80s female freedom will feature a themed DJ set with insight into the films, and special food items by @let_val_feed_you!
